Subseries I-A: Personality Files Large (PL)

Scope and Contents

Subseries I-A: Personality Large (PL), is the largest subseries and consists of 9” x 12” files. This subseries includes both photographs and clippings. Files for prominent individuals, both local and non-local, tend to be found in the PL files, because the files are physically larger and can accommodate both larger, as well as a greater number of, items per file. However, this largest subseries is also where most of the “ordinary” people can be found also.

Subseries I-B: Personality Files Medium (PM)

Sub-Series

Scope and Contents Subseries I-B: Personality Medium (PM) consists of 5” x 8” files (sometimes referred to as “card size” files in earlier descriptions and indices). This subseries includes both photographs (8 linear feet) and clippings (64 linear feet). Because of the smaller file size, the files in this subseries tend to contain fewer items per file than the PL files. Subseries I-D: Personality Files Oversize (OSBP and OSD)

Scope and Contents

Subseries I-D: Personality Oversize (OSBP and OSD) consists of photographs only, in sizes too large to fit into the ordinary 9” x 12” files in PL. The majority of these photographs are in 13” x 16” flat boxes (OSBP), and ones too large even for those boxes are stored in flat file drawers (OSD) in map folders. A complete listing for this subseries is included in the online finding aid.

Subseries I-E: Personality VIP Files (PVIP)

Sub-Series

Scope and Contents

Subseries I-E: Personality VIP Files (PVIP) may include photographs and clippings for specific “very important people” (frequently requested people). These have been separated out into their own special box(es), often a 3-ring binder box (in the case of photos). Examples of PVIP files include Neil Armstrong, Charles F. Kettering, and the Wright Brothers.

Scope and Contents Subseries II-F: Journal Herald Numeric Files contains both photographs and clippings, most of which date to the earlier part of the collection's overall span, and most of which concern topics of less enduring interest. (These are files that appear to have been seldom, if ever, referred to after their initial filing. Files that were frequently recalled were eventually re-classified and refiled into one of the other subseries, usually JH Alphanumeric, as demonstrated by the presence of numeric...

Scope and Contents The subseries Negatives by Subject includes photos of both topics and people. It consists primarily of large format (4” x 5”) black and white negatives in envelopes with original descriptions and dates, from the photographer. Some files also include the assignment sheet or other notes or attachments. These negatives may contain additional shots or views related to one that appeared in the newspaper. It is important to note that the date on the envelope may not be the same as the date that photographs ran in the newspaper....
